Don Bennett's War

Chapter 8 - Good Times

Our meals at the staging area weren't so hot either. Scrambled powdered eggs and vienna sausage for every meal became tiresome and my stomach became so upset that when they gave us wine for communion, I barely could hold it till the service was over and vomiting it up when I got 50 feet from the open chapel. There was a lot of deep thought and prayers at that chapel service that Sunday. I was thinking of God, home, and of what was ahead of me in this war. This was the last for many of us gathered there, including Lundeen, who was there beside me.

The mail began to come in after we were there a week. I kept looking for letters from home, but none came in for a few days. I finally got one from home and one from Ginny about the tenth day. Jerry Wack received a letter from his wife announcing that he was a father.

A miniature flood hit us one day when a downpour came in on us one morning. When it began to seep into our pup tents, we got out our little shovels and began to ditch the water around them. But it came down too fast and a couple inches seeped into our tent, getting all of our belongings wet, including my election ballot on which I was to vote for Roosevelt. Some of the men's tents had six inches of water in them, and although we built fires to dry our belongings out, there was many a wet blanket to sleep in that night.
