Piermont Pier, New York

Piermont is located on the west shore of the Hudson River in Rockland County, New York, just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge. It is the former eastern terminus of the Erie Railroad. The pier from which Camp Shanks embarkees boarded ships bound for France or ferries bound for the New York Port of Embarkation and England still survives (photos below are reprinted courtesy The Rushton Young Westchester/Rockland Page). The pier is located at the east end of Paradise Avenue. An outstanding example of reuse, this mile-long dock is now a tree-lined public walkway jutting out into the Hudson River. The concrete pier is still used by local fishermen. A bronze commemorative plaque is mounted on a large stone at the entrance to the pier with an inscription which reads "In Memory of Those Who Never Returned — May God Be with All of Them."
